Hearing you have type 2 diabetes can feel like a lot. Most of us know someone living with diabetes or have seen people check their blood sugar, take insulin, or talk about cutting back on sugar. We've also probably heard things from doctors or read things online, but sometimes that information can be overwhelming and hard to understand. It can be hard to know what type 2 diabetes actually is-and what it means for you. So, let's walk through the full picture, from an educator's point of view, so you can feel confident in what's happening in your body and what you can do moving forward.
How Type 2 Diabetes Is Diagnosed?
First, how do you know you have type 2 diabetes? Only a doctor can diagnose diabetes, but these are the most common tests used to diagnose type 2 diabetes today.
A1C Test (Most Common)
The A1C measures your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months - no fasting required. A lot of people have heard of this test but are not exactly sure what it means or why you do not have to fast for the test. To better explain, here is a visual:
Think of your red blood cells like cereal:
- New red blood cells = cornflakes
- Older ones = frosted flakes
Your body makes new red blood cells about every 2-3 months, and they float through your bloodstream alongside sugar. Over time, sugar naturally clings to those cells-just like frosting building up on cornflakes. The more sugar that's been in your blood, the thicker that "frosting" becomes.
By measuring how much sugar has attached to your red blood cells, the A1C tells you and your doctor what your average blood sugar has been for the past few months. An A1C of 6.5% or higher typically indicates diabetes.
Random Blood Sugar Test
Taken anytime, regardless of when you last ate. This may be done at a routine doctor's visit, or when you come in with symptoms, such as frequent urination.
A result of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher, especially with symptoms, suggests diabetes.
Fasting Blood Sugar Test
This test is done after an overnight fast. It's usually done with your physical or wellness check blood work. Results usually indicate:
- <100 mg/dL = no diabetes
- 100-125 mg/dL = prediabetes
- ≥126 mg/dL on two tests = diabetes
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test
This test is common in pregnancy or special cases or conditions.
Blood sugar is checked 2 hours after drinking a sugary drink.
- <140 mg/dL = healthy
- 140-199 mg/dL = prediabetes
- ≥200 mg/dL = diabetes
Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes
Next, what symptoms might you have? Symptoms of type 2 diabetes often develop slowly and can be easy to miss. Many people don't realize what's happening until blood sugar is very high.
Common symptoms include:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination (when glucose levels get extremely high, many clients describe it as urgent need to urinate, sometimes causing accidents)
- Dry, itchy skin
- Fatigue, sleepiness, especially after meals
- Blurry vision, especially after meals
- Slow‑healing cuts or sores
- Frequent infections (these may be any type of infection, but UTIs and yeast infections are common)
- Unexplained weight loss
- Feeling extremely hungry or craving sugar often

As you can tell, some of these symptoms may not cause alarm. We may shrug them off and attribute them to other things, so if you have symptoms and risk factors, it's important to get checked.
Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes
Speaking of risk factors, what are the risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes? While not all risk factors can be changed, knowing what they are is the first step toward taking charge of your health.
Risk factors for developing Type 2 Diabetes Include:
- Genetics/family history
- Age (risk increases after 35-45)
- Race/ethnicity
- Certain medications
- Weight (being overweight or obese)
- Lack of physical activity
- Diet (high in processed food, sugars and fats)
- Poor sleep
- Stress
- Smoking
- Alcohol intake (greater than 3 drinks a day on average)
One important thing to remember is that you do not have to have all the risk factors to be at risk for developing type 2 diabetes (this is not meant to scare you, but just to bring awareness). I've worked with many people who were at a healthy weight or only slightly overweight who have developed type 2 diabetes. I've also seen young adults and even teens develop type 2 diabetes. Any one of these factors can play a role; which is why regular check‑ups and screenings are so important.
What Type 2 Diabetes Actually Is
Now that we've covered how diabetes is diagnosed and what the symptoms look like, let's talk about what type 2 diabetes actually is: what's happening inside your body on a day‑to‑day basis.
Most people have heard of "high blood sugar" or "insulin resistance," but those phrases don't mean much until you understand the mechanics behind them. Here's the simple, educator‑friendly version.
First: How Your Body Normally Handles Sugar
Your body needs fuel to work, and glucose (sugar) is one of its main sources of fuel. That's why we always have some glucose in our blood-it's there so your body can use it for energy. As you are sitting here reading this article, your body is actively using sugar or glucose for energy. Glucose is allowing your brain to think, your heart to beat and more. So how does the body use glucose for energy?
Here's what normally happens when you eat:
- You eat foods that contain carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates are found in foods like bread, rice, pasta, fruit, milk, potatoes, beans, and sweets. - Your body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose.
Glucose is a type of sugar that your body can use for energy. - Glucose moves into your bloodstream.
This is normal. After you eat carbohydrates, the amount of glucose in your blood naturally goes up a little until it gets to where it needs to go. - Your pancreas releases insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose from your blood into your cells that make up those body parts that need fuel (muscles, brain, heart, etc.). An easy way to think about insulin is as a key. - Insulin helps glucose enter your cells.
Insulin "unlocks" the cells so glucose can move out of your blood and inside of your cells, where it can be used for energy.
For a visual of this, imagine that the cells throughout your body are tiny furnaces.
Glucose is the fuel. Insulin is the key that opens the furnace door.
When insulin opens the door, glucose can move from your blood into the cell. Once inside, your cells can burn that glucose for energy.
This process is happening throughout your body all day long. It helps provide the energy your brain, heart, muscles, and other organs need to do their jobs.
Where Things Start to Go Wrong: Insulin Resistance
With type 2 diabetes, your cells stop responding to insulin the way they used to. This is called insulin resistance.
It's like someone put gum in the locks on the cell doors.
The insulin "key" still works-but not smoothly, quickly, or efficiently.
Because the doors don't open well:
- Glucose stays in the bloodstream longer
- Blood sugar levels rise
- The pancreas tries to make more insulin
- Over time, the pancreas gets tired and can't keep up as well as it used to
This is the core problem in type 2 diabetes.
Other Things That Happen Behind the Scenes
Insulin resistance doesn't happen in isolation. Several other changes occur:
1. The liver leaks extra sugar
Your liver stores sugar for emergencies. With insulin resistance, it starts releasing sugar even when you don't need it.
2. Hunger increases
When sugar can't get into your cells, your body thinks you're low on fuel-even when your blood sugar is already high.
3. Energy drops
Cells aren't getting the fuel they need, so you may feel tired or sleepy after meals.
4. The pancreas works overtime
It pumps out more and more insulin trying to overcome resistance. Eventually, it may not be able to keep up.
All of this leads to higher blood sugar-but the good news is, every part of this process can be improved with nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and medication when needed.
Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Reversed?

Many people often wonder if diabetes can be reversed? The way I think of it is, some people can reach remission: meaning blood sugar returns to a non‑diabetic range without medication.
This often happens through:
- Dietary changes
- Increased physical activity
- Weight loss
- Better sleep
- Stress reduction
But remission in blood sugar can rise again if habits change, or as we get older. And not everyone can achieve remission with these changes due to genetics, age, or how long type 2 diabetes was present before diagnosis.
Everyone, however, can improve their numbers and live a long, healthy life.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition where your body has trouble using insulin effectively, causing sugar to build up in the bloodstream instead of moving into your cells for energy. It develops from a mix of genetics, age, lifestyle, and how your body responds to insulin over time.
